What is Poetry Anyways

What is poetry
What is it really

Can you write without rhyming
Is there meant to be structure
Or a conscious stream
Of thought

Can you jump around and
Mess with the sound

Can you write when you’re not
Feeling inspired

Or is that not how it works

Are random thoughts on a page
Poetry’s version of abstract art
Or is poetry already meant to be
Something free

Free of form
Free of the confines of paragraphs
And punctuation

Poetry feels the free spirited cousin
Who doesn’t always make sense
You know
The one you love but rarely see

The one you look at with
Head cocked to the side and say
Hmm, well how about that

Sometimes poetry gives you chills
And then you put it down and move on

It feels not quite the same as
A favorite song
Listening again and again and again

But that’s okay
Because poetry doesn’t really care
And sometimes it’s not meant to be
A masterpiece
